Why wait for the big bang, which might take a hundred years to happen in academia?
Top brass at City University and City of London Poly considered a merger back around 1990. When the unions found out about the talks they met each other and decided against because the subject mix and differing strategies made for an unhappy and unsuccessful match.
Years later after the successful stragic collaboration between City and Queen Mary, notably over the BA in Journalism and Contemporary History, I tried to persuade David Rhind and Adrian Smith, to foster a full merger between the two universities. Which does make a sensible subject mix (QM has a medical school and an arts faculty, which City does not.)
I failed but the arguments for the match are as good as ever. Why not push for it in public and private?
