Saddam’s execution video

Such is the nature of old media that Saddam’s execution video still spins the discussion wheels. The UK’s Independent sees it as evidence of a massive shift in the ability of individuals to influence the news agenda…etc. etc.

The video actually tells us just two things about the hanging:

  1. It was badly organized
  2. Executions aren’t nice

The arrest of the individual who shot the video will undoubtedly deter anyone tempted to video other executions. The genie of information freedom pops out, but the stopper quickly goes back on the bottle. Think back. Until Saddam’s turn came, had you seen any pictures of other executions at Camp Justice? It was Camp Indifference as far as most of us were concerned. So forgive me for not heralding the new dawn.

If the U.S. army had hanged him, you wouldn’t have seen a frame. Next time, the Iraqis will undoubtedly get their act together. And whether or not they choose to humiliate murderous old Ba’athists before opening the trap door, you will probably neither see nor care.
