Saw an Arab journalist friend yesterday. He was describing a trip he’d been on to a Western country with some leading Middle Eastern journalists. One of their Western hosts expressed private horror at the prejudice and narrow-mindedness some of his colleagues brought to the experience.
“You shouldn’t judge them as journalists,” my friend said, by way of explanation. “Think of them as victims of the regimes your governments have supported.”

For all our criticisms of our own society (well, all my criticisms of the US), we’re very much products of it. Almost by definition, very few transcend it.
