Ten Alps has just launched a broadband TV channel for my county coucil, Kent. Sir Bob Geldof reckons every local authority will have one in five years.
I wish I had the sheer brass to sell shite like this. What was the deal clincher? “A platform for your back catalogue of cheesy old VNRs.”
Now, if they made it a bit more like Rutland Weekend Television…

“Sir Bob Geldof reckons every local authority will have one in five years”… I don’t think he’s wrong either.
But for local to work, it’s got to be by those who live and breathe local, that’s the whole premise around local newspapers having an online video presence.
“News you can use” – where have you heard that slogan before?
Of course if the trustees sign off and the BBC can afford it, given its budget cuts, then local TV (they don’t like that word) under the umbrella of Nations and Regions will be here to stay.
They have 900 video journalists or thereabouts who will likely contribute to this.
The audience research stats look impressive. I recorded one of their execs talking about it in Norway and will post some time.
So, whether it’s ba humbug or yippe yi yaye, local TV is shaping up for something of a bun fight with, it’s estimated, millions of pounds in ad revenue to be had.
Storybridge is a good US model for selling that bete noire of TV News, good news.
Fancy soon having news about your street. Urgh!
There’s a dispute in my area around the local park. Neighbourhood News, with Trevor ??? . . . don’t laugh too soon.
Nice if it wasn’t as naff as Kent TV!
LOL :)
