Off topic: The Frick

Managed to get to the Frick today, probably my all time favourite art gallery.

Among the countless gems, two great portraits, linked by green damask (the images below do them little justice btw).

First up, one everyone knows – Holbein’s Thomas More (is the plodding Thomas Cromwell opposite really by the same hand?), painted in the late 1520s.

Second, Bronzino’s picture of Lodovico Capponi juniore, from the 1550s.

Frick himself was an interesting character: a union-buster and target of terrorism (a Russian anarchist in his case).

His own portrait is pretty dismal, but the house at 1 East 70th Street is his mausoleum, and grander than a Pharoah’s tomb.
