Talking politics 2

A brief review of my efforts on Talking Politics from David Preiser at Biased BBC. And it’s a case of “you can’t please all of the people…”

I found the defenders of the BBC to be – as expected – quite defensive. Prof. Monck clearly lives in the same ivory tower as Director Helen Boaden, although he was not presented as the staunch defender of the BBC that he is.

Monck says straight out that if the BBC was altered to better reflect the opinions of the British public, it would be a BBC that he would like less than he does now. Why was he even allowed on? His and Helen Boaden’s comments alternated between an almost arrogant dismissiveness and willful obtuseness.

Only two ls in wilful, Dave! If only you’d written pedantic dismissiveness!

Postscript: Here is David Cox with his take on the debate.

  1. Adrian, have just listened to the programme(very good discusion). How you can be accused of defending the BBC,I really am not sure.

I have never really agreed with the view that there is this ethos of liberalism throughtout the corporation.I think that it is more of a “don’t rock the boat” mentality.

But as you say at the end,if we don’t like what we are hearing, there are now plenty of other news outlets to listen or watch

  2. I do think there’s big issues with accountability – there has to be a way of introducing some kind of democratic process into the BBC’s governance…(but that point got cut!)
