Making sense of Twitter for journalists

I know there’s nothing like being late to a party, but if you’re still wondering how to make sense of Twitter, then let me share a couple of tips.

You need Twhirl – think IM interface – an RSS reader and Tweetscan/Summize/Twitbuzz. Then you can set up custom searches on Tweetscan, dump them into a reader, and manage your tweets with the IM interface. As culinary philanthropist Gordon Ramsay would say: – Twitter. Done.

Update: Try Twitscoop for a live Twitter tag cloud.

  1. Assuming Twitter is working, of course. IM Twitter is down. Archive posts are down more than not of late.

  2. Well, the just-under-$100-million dollar valuation that came along with the $15million VC money should help it overcome its tech problems. But with the twitter architect departed and defending himself over inability to scale, I think the window to make it work before the faithful abandon ship is closing rapidly.

  3. I’m not so sure of your prognosis Adam. Ice been using Twitter since it first launched. It’s had endless problems, flake outs and wotnot. The interesting thing is, everyone I know who was on it back then us still on it now. Despite the crappy reliability. These same folk haven’t felt such strong loyalty to facebook et al. Dunno quite why that is, but Twitter has clearly captured the imagination much like Blogger originally did. There is plenty of competition – Jaiku, Pownce etc. But, its Twitter with its ocassional crappiness that continues to keep momentum. I wouldn’t write it off just yet.

  4. I’ve had quite a few invites to friend people on Pownce in recent weeks since Twitter got particularly kooky, and yesterday a bit of a flurry to check out Plurk. But everyone I know’s still hanging in there on Twitter. Can’t quite figure out why it’s so good, I just know it is.
