They always smile, even when they&#8217;re not actually billing you.<\/p>\n<p>Big hats off to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/people\/a.d.scott@lse.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Andy Scott<\/strong><\/a> of the <strong>LSE<\/strong>&#8216;s law department for bringing together a terrific cast of what we in journalism would &#8211; rather unimaginatively &#8211; call &#8220;top lawyers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org.uk\/about\/chathamhouserule\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chatham House rules<\/a>, but the lawyers thought:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Eady\"><strong>David Eady<\/strong><\/a> is waging a one-judge privacy campaign based on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Article_8_ECHR\" target=\"_blank\">Article 8<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/conventions.coe.int\/treaty\/en\/Treaties\/Html\/005.htm\" target=\"_blank\">European Convention on Human Rights<\/a> trumping <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Article_10_ECHR\" target=\"_blank\">Article 10<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Privacy needs parliamentary intervention<\/li>\n<li>Privacy damages remain minimal<\/li>\n<li>CFAs (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawsociety.org.uk\/choosingandusing\/payingforservices\/nowinnofee.law\" target=\"_blank\">No win, no fee<\/a>) haven&#8217;t increased libel actions and the cost of insurance premiums (in case poorer claimants lose) still restricts access to justice<\/li>\n<li>A sense of growing &#8216;opportunities&#8217; in copyright and privacy<\/li>\n<li>A dissatisfaction with the slowness of the whole process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lawyers didn&#8217;t talk about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pre-emptive injunctions<\/li>\n<li>Possible US <a href=\"http:\/\/lieberman.senate.gov\/newsroom\/release.cfm?id=297383\" target=\"_blank\">Free Speech Protection Act<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Weren&#8217;t interested in ISPs, Google and Yahoo<\/li>\n<li>Weren&#8217;t very interested in &#8216;freedom of speech&#8217; issues<\/li>\n<li>Mainly saw regulation of journalism as an &#8216;old media&#8217; issue involving revelations over the private lives of celebrities, politicians, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like lawyers.
