Readers respond&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span class=\"dropcaps\">B<\/span>yron Calame<\/span>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/03\/opinion\/03pubed.html\">analysis<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/adrianmonck.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/what-makes-reporters-tick.html\">the motivations of journalists <\/a>has received some interesting responses from readers of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New York Times<\/span>. Here are my two faves:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>The <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">New York Times<\/span>\u2019s business editors would ridicule any essay by a chief executive that purported to show that business executives\u2019 motivations are largely altruistic based on a survey of business executives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>That you, and others, are motivated to become journalists to \u201cright wrongs\u201d is good, as long as your definition of what is wrong and how it should be righted matches mine. When it doesn\u2019t, I feel ill served.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, journalism students often say that they want to become journalists to be \u201cchange agents.\u201d I would be more encouraged if at least some of the people you spoke with had the more humble response that they wanted to be reporters simply to find out what\u2019s happening and tell people about it.
