{"id":203,"date":"2007-01-12T04:41:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-12T10:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=203"},"modified":"2007-01-12T04:41:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-12T10:41:00","slug":"greg-dyke-on-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/01\/greg-dyke-on-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg Dyke on Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"pullquote\"  style=\"font-size:130%;\">The current external handicaps faced by the organisation in respect of Charter Review would be greatly relieved in the wake of Greg\u2019s departure.<\/span><span class=\"dropcaps\">O<\/span>bviously no-one on the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Today<\/span> programme has read <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Greg Dyke<\/span>&#8216;s <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Greg-Dyke-Inside-Story\/dp\/0007193645\/sr=1-1\/qid=1168598532\/ref=sr_1_1\/203-6333046-5176710?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books\" target=\"_blank\">Inside Story<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The intro for the Dyke interview today, going over the minutes from the Governors&#8217; meetings (which the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BBC<\/span> had sought to keep from being made public) said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Greg Dyke was fired by the Governors as director-general of the BBC after the Hutton report was published, wrote to them a week later asking for his job back. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Poor old <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">John Humphrys <\/span>probably hadn&#8217;t read the script through before speaking it, because he corrected himself immediately &#8211; Dyke actually resigned.<\/p>\n<p>But repeating the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/2007\/01\/12\/ndyke12.xml\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s take on the story meant they laid themselves open to correction from the former D-G on the air: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/today\/listenagain\/ram\/today4_bbc_20070112.ram\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">&#8220;This isn&#8217;t a news story&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/a> Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>BBC Media correspondent, <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Torin Douglas,<\/span> who has read <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Inside Story<\/span>, had suggested <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/entertainment\/6254307.stm\" target=\"_blank\">a better line<\/a> on the website:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In his book, he describes this proposal as &#8220;tongue-in-cheek&#8221; but the minutes show it was taken seriously and discussed fully.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps a debate on the Beeb&#8217;s support for <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Freedom of Information<\/span> might have been a better use of the slot. It might also have asked why someone at the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BBC<\/span> released the unrequested minutes of the second meeting discussing Dyke&#8217;s &#8220;tongue-in-cheek&#8221; request.  Did they want to embarrass him?<\/p>\n<p>In case you are not bored by the wrangling, the key line from the minutes is in the box above.
