And you might even be able to guess from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.londonmediaclub.org\/summit\/index.php?id=schedule\">the website<\/a> who thought what:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some newspaper websites couldn&#8217;t have grown without <strong>Google<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But there may come a point at which it may be necessary to limit Google&#8217;s access.<!--more-->cf.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.editorsweblog.org\/multimedia\/2008\/11\/denmark_bloggers_versus_traditional_medi.php\">Google News vs Danish Newspapers<\/a>,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/2008\/11\/microsoft-to-newspapers-you-made-information-free-for-google\/\">Microsoft to Newspapers: You made information free. For Google<\/a>,<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paidcontent.org\/entry\/419-belgian-newspapers-to-google-pay-us-77m-for-indexing-our-news\/\">Belgian Newspapers To Google: Pay Us $77M For Indexing Our News<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The newspaper industry has stood back and let Google assume dominance.<\/p>\n<p>The prospect was raised of a Google licensing scheme or revenue share, cf. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/external\/readwriteweb\/2008\/10\/28\/28readwriteweb-end_of_snippet_view_google_books.html\">The End of Snippet View: Google Settles Lawsuit with Book Publishers<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>News Corp. still an example to other newspaper publishers &#8211; looking at taking more control of distribution, finding out more about subscriber base.<\/p>\n<p>Advertising won&#8217;t help &#8211; you need a decent cover price &#8211; like <em>The Economist<\/em>. But newspaper pricing is not very elastic, e.g. <em>Sunday Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2006\/sep\/08\/sundaytimes.pressandpublishing\">\u00a32 move<\/a>, <em>Independent<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2008\/nov\/24\/independent-alton-price-rise\"> \u00a31<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Display market costs a lot. Real challenge is monetizing fragmented international readership. Media companies need platform companies to make that happen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No one has yet come out in favour of my own personal favourite idea &#8211; a <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Google<\/span> Search Engine tax.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some thoughts from the London Media Summit conducted at my alma mater under Chatham House rules.
