{"id":210,"date":"2007-01-14T04:42:00","date_gmt":"2007-01-14T10:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=210"},"modified":"2007-01-14T04:42:00","modified_gmt":"2007-01-14T10:42:00","slug":"lehrers-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/01\/lehrers-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Lehrer&#8217;s rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">I<\/span> seem to be stuck in a recycling ancient wisdom groove, but <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Jim Lehrer<\/span> who presents <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">NewsHour<\/span> recently gave <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmpbs.org\/content\/index.cfm\/fuseaction\/watchnow\/series\/26.htm\" target=\"_blank\">a speech<\/a> where he laid down his journalism guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>I know it might sound a tad sanctimonious, but I like it!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Do nothing I cannot defend.<\/li>\n<li>Cover, write, and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me.<\/li>\n<li>Assume there is at least one other side or version to every story.<\/li>\n<li>Assume the viewer is as smart, and as caring, and as good a person as I am.<\/li>\n<li>Assume the same about all people on whom I report.<\/li>\n<li>Assume personal lives are a private matter unless a legitimate turn in the story absolutely mandates otherwise.<\/li>\n<li>Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories and clearly label everything.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use anonymous sources or blind quotes except on rare and monumental occasions.<\/li>\n<li>No one should ever be allowed to attack another anonymously.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, I am not in the entertainment business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plansphere.com\/blog\/?p=526\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Bonnemann<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I seem to be stuck in a recycling ancient wisdom groove, but Jim Lehrer who presents NewsHour recently gave a speech where he laid down his journalism guidelines.
