{"id":293,"date":"2007-02-20T09:27:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-20T15:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=293"},"modified":"2007-02-20T09:27:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-20T15:27:00","slug":"newspaper-advice-from-wall-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/02\/newspaper-advice-from-wall-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Newspaper advice from Wall Street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">T<\/span>he ever readable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.followthemedia.com\/fittoprint\/fine20022007.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Philip Stone<\/a> passes on a few hoary but worthwhile tips, care of Wall Street analyst <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lauren Rich Fine<\/span> (does she have to include the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Rich<\/span> bit?):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Editorially&#8230;newspapers have gone astray by using the front page for stories that readers don\u2019t really want there \u2013 they\u2019ve seen or heard most of that breaking news elsewhere.  What readers expect from their newspapers is context, analysis and stories they just won\u2019t find anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>She believes newspapers are making a big mistake by trying to become more youth friendly to recapture those readers.  \u201cHere\u2019s a news flash,\u201d she said, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to change your newspaper to be a youth rag because they will never read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And so her recommendations for the industry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accept that circulation is in decline. Raising circulation rates isn\u2019t going to be the solution. It\u2019s a minority revenue stream, anyway at 15%-20%.<\/li>\n<li>Put up the \u201cwork in progress\u201d sign and don\u2019t pay attention to Wall Street or anyone else. Figure out what\u2019s wrong, take the time and money to fix it, even if it takes five years<\/li>\n<li>Keep the shareholders happy by returning some of that cash flow in the form of share repurchases or higher dividends, but don\u2019t worry about the share price. Let it drop. It will buy you time to try things out.<\/li>\n<li>Try many things but if you see they don\u2019t work then cut to the next new thing.
