{"id":365,"date":"2007-03-22T16:27:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-22T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=365"},"modified":"2007-03-22T16:27:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-22T22:27:00","slug":"do-african-governments-deserve-to-be-taken-at-face-value","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/03\/do-african-governments-deserve-to-be-taken-at-face-value\/","title":{"rendered":"Do African governments deserve to be taken at face value?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">T<\/span>he news out of <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Zimbabwe<\/span> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/africa\/article1550900.ece\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Times<\/span><\/span><\/a> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/larapawson.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">friend of mine<\/a> in <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Angola<\/span> complaining: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the paper fails to point out that the Angolan government has denied this story as &#8216;a gross lie.&#8217; If the US government made such a denial would the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Times<\/span> omit it? &#8230; The Angolan authorities might not be telling the truth &#8211; they are not well known for transparency &#8211; but then nor is the US, nor the UK for that matter. Remember Iraq and that dossier?<\/p>\n<p>But that is not the point: at least do them the favour of representing their version of events. If it turns out they have lied, you can still have a field day reporting that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Reuters<\/span><\/span> does report the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alertnet.org\/thenews\/newsdesk\/L22283873.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Angolan response<\/a> from <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Luanda<\/span>.
