But, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishpressawards.com\/bpa.html\" target=\"_blank\">British Press Awards<\/a>, there was some <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">outstanding journalism<\/span> on display. To invidiously name just three of the winners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/a05c948e-dc4e-11db-a21d-000b5df10621.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sheila McNulty<\/a> on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">BP<\/span><\/li>\n<li>The <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Sunday Times<\/span> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/uk\/article788736.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Cash for Honours<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Christina Lamb<\/span> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/world\/article681998.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Afghanistan<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Still, there were no online awards, and as host and<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> TV news<\/span> anchor, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/authors\/jon+snow\/106040#bio\">Jon Snow<\/a>, pointed out &#8211; isn&#8217;t the press the media now? How many people in the audience, he asked, had come from podcasting and video-editing? To be fair, not many. Can the day be long nigh when these awards converge with others!<\/p>\n<p>(Incidentally, the basement ballroom at the awards venue was a cellphone blackspot which left even diehard <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a> fans feeling like&#8230;well Twatters.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a strangeness about the British press &#8211; the newspapers go from ponderous analysis to pure entertainment and they bring the techniques of journalism to bear on all of that content.
