They laughed. I hate to sound smug, but they\u2019re starting their push.<br \/><span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s not all plain sailing. Take the news (my particular interest) &#8211; when you&#8217;re launching a neutral, impartial news service in the United States then surely you want to launch it by emphasising your neutrality and impartiality?<\/p>\n<p>This is how one BBC exec announced the move: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think with George W.\u2009Bush\u2019s approval rating at 29 per cent, having a news broadcast with a neutral, British, BBC approach is well-timed,\u201d Garth Ancier, president of BBC America, told the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/97b20dc2-1cfa-11dc-9b58-000b5df10621.html\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a><\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">George W. Bush<\/span>\u2019s approval rating got to do with it? The implication is that because the President is taking a public opinion bath there\u2019s an opportunity for the BBC. That may be a good message for the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Guardian<\/span><\/span> to send out as it attempts to capture disillusioned American liberals, but it isn\u2019t a good message for the BBC to be sending out.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine if you changed the name Bush to <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Tony Blair<\/span>, or <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Gordon Brown<\/span> &#8211; point taken?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A while back I warned a couple of media chums in the US that the BBC would come gunning for them.
