That research, with the snappy title <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Paid content strategies for news websites: An empirical study of British newspapers online business models<\/span><\/span>, is out now. You can download a preview <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city.ac.uk\/journalism\/download_files\/business_models.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The headlines?<span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what Neil found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>British online newspapers that currently charge for news stories and op-ed &#8211; like <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">FT.com<\/span> and <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Independent.co.uk<\/span> &#8211; see the benefits of dropping paywalls and making more content free. Archive content too is being freed up to make sites, such as <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">TimesOnline.co.uk<\/span>, more visible to search engines.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>A buoyant ad market is driving the move freeward. The study confirms that ads are the main revenue stream online (90%, in some cases). But revenues from online services and commercial partnerships are growing by 20-30%+ a year at the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Guardian.co.uk<\/span>; whilst at the <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Telegraph.co.uk<\/span> they contributed close to a third of total profits.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Editors don&#8217;t like\/make money from digital editions.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Email services are a growth area.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Online &#8216;cannibalization&#8217; concerns are a thing of the past at most newspapers.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>All the papers were charging for something, with editors recognizing the need to expand commercial services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My colleague Neil Thurman has spent the last few months talking to online editors across the UK about how they see their businesses.
