T<\/span>he first use of the word journalism<\/span> is recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary<\/a> like this:<\/p>\n

1833 Westm. Rev. Jan. 195 (Reviewing a French work \u2018Du Journalisme<\/span>\u2019) \u2018Journalism<\/span>\u2019 is a good name for the thing meant..A word was sadly wanted. Ibid. 196 The power of journalism<\/span> is acknowledged..to be enormous in France.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But the OED<\/span> is wrong…
Here is The Quarterly Review<\/span> from 1832: <\/p>\n

\u2018The growth of every thing both in art and nature,\u2019 says Hume, \u2018at last checks itself.\u2019 So it proved with Jacobinism, which, when it obtained power, brought about its own destruction by its excesses\u2014so it will prove with Journalism<\/span>, that fourth estate which has been described by one of its members as a power stronger than both the Chambers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is from The Metropolitan<\/span>, 1831:<\/p>\n

The truth is, \u201cJournalism<\/span>\u201d is favourable to the rights of the people, and to the correction of abuses; therefore is it an object of animosity to those who profit from misusing them…<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Mechanics<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span> Magazine, Museum, Register, Journal, and Gazette<\/span><\/span>, 1831: <\/p>\n

Progress of Journalism<\/span>.\u2014The proportion which the number of journals in each quarter of the world bears to its population is as follows:\u2014In Asia there is one paper for every 14,000,000; in Africa, one for every 5,000,000; in Europe, one for every 106,000; in America, one for every 40,000.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And this is from The <\/span>Monthly Review<\/span>, vol. VI, 1827:<\/p>\n

He seems to be convinced, that the morbid eagerness for the transitory pleasures which journalism<\/span>, to make use of a French term, can only afford, is yielding to the dominion of a more healthy appetite, which demands wholesome and substantial knowledge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
