{"id":523,"date":"2007-07-13T06:49:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-13T12:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=523"},"modified":"2007-07-13T06:49:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-13T12:49:00","slug":"putting-commenters-in-context","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/07\/putting-commenters-in-context\/","title":{"rendered":"Putting commenters in context"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_7FX8PyQEiZw\/Rpd4X3rdQoI\/AAAAAAAAAFc\/uc_4cG0G2Ng\/s1600-h\/My+Telegraph+-+Adrian+Monck.jpeg\"><\/a><br \/><span class=\"dropcaps\">C<\/span>omments have had a lot of play recently, what with <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.pmarca.com\/2007\/07\/comments-trackb.html\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Andreessen<\/a> turning them off, and US newspapers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howardowens.com\/2007\/this-will-become-the-trend-news-sites-to-require-real-names-on-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\">banning anonymous ones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_7FX8PyQEiZw\/Rpd2mnrdQmI\/AAAAAAAAAFM\/eETZ5Iuhvrc\/s1600-h\/My+Telegraph-+Most+Popular.jpeg\"><\/a>So is comment worth it? I like the ones I get on this blog, because the responses are invariably interesting and engaged (flattery etc.). But is context important for comment? I did a little experiment.<\/p>\n<p>This blog not being over-burdened with comment, and egged on by <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.charliebeckett.org\/?p=218\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Beckett<\/a>\u2019s account of his experiences, I thought I would try punting <a href=\"http:\/\/adrianmonck.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/collateral-damage-of-documentary.html\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post<\/a> on to <a style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/my.telegraph.co.uk\/adrian_monck\" target=\"_blank\">My Telegraph<\/a>, which looks cool and sophisticated, thanks to the efforts of good folk like <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/shanerichmond\/apr07\/mytele.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Shane Richmond<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On my own Blogger site the post attracted only a couple of comments. At <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">My Telegraph<\/span> it got a couple of dozen, propelling it into the <span style=\"font-style:italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Telegraph<\/span><\/span>\u2019s top ten most commented. So are the comments worth it?<span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<p>Not for me, I\u2019m sorry to report. For starters, commenters seemed to be a small group. Second, they didn\u2019t so much respond to the post as use it to kick off a \u201cconversation\u201d that could probably have taken place under anything (like a bus shelter). Third, that conversation was dull and uninformed. Read them for yourself, if you have half an hour of your life that you don\u2019t want back, and make your own judgement.<\/p>\n<p>The only interesting moment came when one of the commmenters &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/my.telegraph.co.uk\/Bearsy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bearsy<\/a> &#8211; revealed that he had two online <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">My Telegraph<\/span> personas.<\/p>\n<p>This admission has, in turn <a href=\"http:\/\/my.telegraph.co.uk\/wiseralph_in_west_china\/july_2007\/double_personas_triples_.htm\" target=\"_blank\">prompted a post<\/a> which is now <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">My Telegraph<\/span>\u2019s most commented on (44 and counting)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the blogoshere, like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pop_Will_Eat_Itself\" target=\"_blank\">pop, will eat itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So same post, two contexts &#8211; and for me at least, context is king.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Comments have had a lot of play recently, what with Marc Andreessen turning them off, and US newspapers banning anonymous ones.
