{"id":533,"date":"2007-07-19T12:34:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-19T18:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=533"},"modified":"2007-07-19T12:34:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-19T18:34:00","slug":"journalism-training-for-executives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/07\/journalism-training-for-executives\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalism training for executives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">T<\/span>ime was when being a journalist was pretty much <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">de rigeur<\/span> for network bosses. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">CBS<\/span> President <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Howard Stringer<\/span> was a news division product. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">NBC<\/span>\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Andy Lack<\/span> (for whom I once did a very great and unacknowledged favour) was a news exec. They knew politics. They had judgement.<\/p>\n<p>In Britain, <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Mark Thompson<\/span> was propelled into his very role by a journalism scandal and  began his career, too, in news. He, like other journalists was trained to make calls on conflicts of interest, to think about responsibility and the law, the clash of politics and values. It\u2019s what they do, to quote an old BBC trailer. But then journalism became old-fashioned and boring. Its ethical concerns and hand-wringing fell from favour. Oh dear&#8230;<span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<p>The training journalists have long received needs to extend beyond the hallowed portals of news divisions and across all sectors if we want people to entertain us with integrity.<\/p>\n<p>As <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Stewart Purvis<\/span> writes in the <a href=\"http:\/\/business.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/business\/industry_sectors\/media\/article2100300.ece\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Times<\/span><\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>with an increasingly shifting and casualised workforce, it becomes difficult to create shared corporate values at any one location.<\/p>\n<p>At City University we are trying to do our best to help by running a training course that gives would-be programme-makers a grounding in broadcasting ethics before they get thrown into the hurly-burly of independent production.<\/p>\n<p>But the course is being paid for not by broadcasters or producers but by students taking out loans or by their parents subsidising them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s time we started reminding ourselves why a background in journalism was once the key to the executive washroom&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time was when being a journalist was pretty much de rigeur for network bosses.
