{"id":650,"date":"2007-10-14T13:10:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-14T13:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=650"},"modified":"2008-12-20T20:10:25","modified_gmt":"2008-12-20T20:10:25","slug":"frick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2007\/10\/frick\/","title":{"rendered":"Off topic: The Frick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">M<\/span>anaged to get to the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.frick.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frick<\/a> today, probably my all time favourite art gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Among the countless gems, two great portraits, linked by green damask (the images below do them little justice btw).<\/p>\n<p>First up, one everyone knows &#8211; <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Holbein_the_Younger\" target=\"_blank\">Holbein<\/a>\u2019s <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_More\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas More<\/a> (is the plodding <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Cromwell\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Cromwell<\/a> opposite really by the same hand?), painted in the late 1520s.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wf-f.org\/WFFResource\/StThomasMore.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wf-f.org\/WFFResource\/StThomasMore.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>Second, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bronzino\" target=\"_blank\">Bronzino<\/a>\u2019s picture of <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=it&amp;u=http:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lodovico_Capponi_juniore&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=translate&amp;resnum=5&amp;ct=result&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3Dlodovico-capponi%26hl%3Den\" target=\"_blank\">Lodovico Capponi juniore<\/a>, from the 1550s.<\/p>\n<p><a onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shopfrick.org\/assets\/images\/shop\/posters\/smallposters\/bronzino_202.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shopfrick.org\/assets\/images\/shop\/posters\/smallposters\/bronzino_202.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Clay_Frick\" target=\"_blank\">Frick<\/a> himself was an interesting character: a union-buster and target of terrorism (a Russian anarchist in his case).<\/p>\n<p>His own portrait is pretty dismal, but the house at 1 East 70th Street is his mausoleum, and grander than a Pharoah\u2019s tomb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Managed to get to the Frick today, probably my all time favourite art gallery.
