Now that the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Dubai<\/span> authorities have <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5jIE0IUn4WIiaMBpjG8SI_6H5RXzgD8SVQ9N80\" target=\"_blank\">shut down<\/a> two independent UAE-based TV channels (GEO and ARY), it all looks a little bit wobbly. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabmediasociety.org\/arab_media_wire\/?item=497\" target=\"_blank\">The test comes, and the UAE caves in<\/a>. But in all of this, few questions have been asked about Dubai&#8217;s suitability as a media safe haven.<span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<p>New York-based NGO, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alertnet.org\/thenews\/newsdesk\/HRW\/45dfc305b07f9476f8fbb1465c81a95f.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, is calling for Dubai to reinstate the channels. Asia director Brad Adams says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBy making itself a party to Musharraf\u2019s repression of the Pakistani media, Dubai is damaging its own international reputation,\u201d said Adams. \u201cThis move sets an appalling precedent and raises serious questions about Dubai\u2019s viability as a regional hub for the international media.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, yes it does. But where is the discussion of that point? What does someone like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itp.com\/press\/pr_full.php?id=64\">Andrew Neil<\/a> think? He just chaired a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ameinfo.com\/137834.html\" target=\"_blank\">big media conference<\/a> in Dubai, and doesn\u2019t often struggle to get his point of view heard. Is he concerned?<\/p>\n<p>Can press freedom really exist outside democracy and the rule of law &#8211; and is Dubai really on a journey towards such institutions? Or is its regime as happy to buy journalists as racehorses?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Geo TV anchor, Kamran Khan, talking to Dawn TV about the shutdown of Geo (just to remind any of the occupants of Media City of what actually happened): <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;I am sure that there must be some legal remedies available for the people who are now based in the Dubai Media City. It is a question of their image. It is a question of their, you know, not only image but there are so many media outlets placed there and they would take it as a message that, you know, one day they can be shut by a phone call, which people thought may be the case.
