T<\/span>he biggest stories you won\u2019t see headlining the news are Germany<\/a> and southern Europe<\/a>\u2019s growing dependence on Russia<\/span>. And China<\/span>\u2019s advance<\/a> into Africa<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Where four decades of Warsaw Pact<\/a><\/span> weaponry failed, gas and oil pipelines are succeeding. Russia\u2019s influence runs right up to the Rhine<\/a><\/span> – and where communism couldn\u2019t win converts, cash and a seat on the board purchases politicians<\/a> like former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder<\/span>.<\/p>\n

It is scary stuff. The British government knows it<\/a> and buries it beneath a green agenda. And even as our diplomatic relations revolve around the Litvinenko<\/span> affair<\/a> the subtext is that we once again find ourselves lining up<\/a> with Poland<\/span> against an alliance between Germany and Russia.<\/p>\n

France looks across the Atlantic and gets results<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Britain is divided by Eurosceptic Little Englanders and disillusioned Atlanticists. And so the not-so-great powers play out the not-so-great game.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile China advances in Africa, with Sudan<\/span> its major overseas oil provider<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And the post-colonial battle for resources is on. For anyone with a fondness for history it\u2019s eerie stuff.<\/p>\n

But we don\u2019t talk about it.<\/p>\n
