F<\/span>rom Joe McGinniss<\/a>, The Selling of the President 1968<\/span><\/a> – a young Roger Ailes<\/span><\/a>, formerly exec producer of the Mike Douglas Show<\/a>, has been hired to produce ten live one-hour programmes featuring Richard Nixon<\/span>. Nixon met the 28-year old Ailes before he appeared on the Douglas show.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a shame a man has to use gimmicks like this to get elected,\u201d Nixon said.
\u201cTelevision is not a gimmick,\u201d Ailes said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

(BTW Nixon beat Mitt Romney<\/span><\/a>\u2019s dad<\/a> to the Republican nomination) As he prepares for the last two shows of the 1968 campaign, Ailes reflects:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the beginning of a whole new concept,\u201d Ailes said. \u201cThis is it. This is the way they\u2019ll be elected forevermore. The next guys up will have to be performers.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nixon wound up his last broadcast like this: <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a showman,\u201d Richard Nixon was telling America. \u201cI\u2019m not a television personality.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And Ailes\u2019s assessment?<\/p>\n

\u201cTonight,\u201d he said, \u201cthis was the Nixon I met on the Douglas show. This was the Nixon I wanted to work for.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, that was a golden age. They do things different now…<\/p>\n
