I<\/span> stumbled upon this TV news \u201cfakery\u201d classic<\/a> from the early 1960s, which comes care of CBS<\/span> veteran Daniel Schorr<\/a>\u2019s memoir, Clearing The Air<\/span><\/a>. Schorr is lunching his boss, CBS chief, Bill Paley<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Schorr tells of a luncheon in Paris during which Paley congratulated him on a CBS documentary about East Germany. \u201cIts dramatic climax,\u201d writes Schorr, \u201cshowed Walther Ulbricht, the East German Communist leader, upbraiding me for my questions and finally storming out of the room in full view of the camera. \u2018What I admired most,\u2019 said Paley, \u2018was the coolness with which you sat there and looked at him while he was yelling at you.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBreaking into laughter, I said, \u2018Surely you understand that the shots of me looking cool were \u201creverses,\u201d filmed after Ulbricht had left the room!\u2019 No, Paley had not understood, that … I proceeded to explain in detail the conventional post-interview procedure for shifting the camera and focusing it on the correspondent to repeat the principal questions, plus a gamut of absorbed and skeptical poses, all of this to be spliced into the interview to add variety and facilitate editing. Paley was fascinated. \u2018But isn\u2019t it basically dishonest?\u2019 he asked finally.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
