{"id":815,"date":"2008-02-15T06:49:00","date_gmt":"2008-02-15T12:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=815"},"modified":"2008-02-15T06:49:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-15T12:49:00","slug":"repackaging-the-evening-news-lessons-from-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2008\/02\/repackaging-the-evening-news-lessons-from-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Repackaging the evening news &#8211; lessons from America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcaps\">M<\/span>y old dead tree version of the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Atlantic<\/span><\/span> finally arrived, and with it a lovely, insightful piece on <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Katie Couric<\/span> and the <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">CBS Evening News<\/span> by Caitlin Flanagan. <\/p>\n<p>As the new <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Kaplinsky<\/span> <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">Five News<\/span> prepares to take to the air, and the revived <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">News at Ten<\/span><\/span> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/media\/2008\/feb\/14\/tvnews.itv?gusrc=rss&amp;feed=media\">struggles<\/a>, here is Flanagan\u2019s conclusion on Couric: <span id=\"fullpost\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That Katie has bombed at CBS is a testament, not to the existence of a glass ceiling, but to the fact that real revolutions are so thoroughgoing that they don\u2019t just provide a new answer, they change the very questions being asked.<\/p>\n<p>Katie\u2019s mandate to lure women and young people to the nightly news was in itself ridiculous and doomed to fail \u2014 and a goal beneath her talent and ambitions. No woman needs to storm the Bastille of nightly news, because the form has become irrelevant: Oprah has immeasurably more cultural, commercial, and political clout than Charles Gibson and Brian Williams, and no young person is ever going to make appointment TV out of a sober-minded 6:30 wrap-up of stories he or she already read online in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Because Katie remembered the old world, the one in which the most-respected news was broadcast at the end of the day, she thought that she was taking a more powerful job.
