L<\/span>ike anyone in education, I never procrastinate today over what I can vacillate about tomorrow. And so it is with my estimation of Nick Denton<\/a><\/span>, Gawker<\/span>\u2019s own Marquis de Sard.<\/p>\n

I admire Denton\u2019s blog empire, and his hard-headed<\/a> approach to posting ($7.50 per 1,000 views<\/a>), and yet it\u2019s obvious too that his own role in Gawker<\/span> largely allows him to pursue the kind of aimless, idiosyncratic nonsense best left to blogs – well – like this one.

Bobbie Johnson<\/span> does an excellent post<\/a> totting up Denton\u2019s numbers and concludes:<\/p>\n

19 of his posts – that\u2019s nearly 21%, stat fans – didn\u2019t even break the hallowed 1,000 pageview threshold\u2026 meaning they weren\u2019t even worth a measly $7.50 in Gawker<\/span>\u2019s pay-per-view model.<\/p>\n

Admittedly, he\u2019s got his own nano-empire to run as well as the site, but Gawker<\/span> does say \u201cedited by Nick Denton\u201d under the masthead. You\u2019ve got to add some value, right? Looks like his obsessions with Barry Diller and the Manhattan media scene aren\u2019t performing well enough.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Denton\u2019s vanity posts piss in the pond of the commercial imperative he preaches. Which really makes Gawker<\/span> more of what, at business school, they delicately refer to as \u201ca lifestyle option.\u201d<\/p>\n

But they also confirm what everyone in journalism has always known. Monetising editorial content across platforms is business, but sardonic wise-assing to whoever\u2019s listening? Pure pleasure!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
