For me as a broadcast journalist, the camera and the microphone are the record. You can\u2019t unsay things to a recording device or speaking live, only apologise or cringe. But in conversation, different standards apply.<\/p>\n

I was at ITN in the early 1990s when John Major referred to his colleagues as \u201cbastards\u201d in a TV interview with ITN\u2019s political editor. The Beeb\u2019s Nick Jones overheard the remarks<\/a>. BBC bosses shared ITN\u2019s view that these post-match mutterings were off the record so Jones leaked his notes to the Observer<\/span>, which broke the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I think the technology has changed all the rules. ITN\/BBC were operating within their conventions, the Observer<\/span> within theirs, but now politicians would be cagier – broadcasters can blog<\/a> those off-mike moments.<\/p>\n

In Power\u2019s case, uttering \u201coff the record\u201d immediately after you\u2019ve said something better left unsaid is no protection.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
