{"id":871,"date":"2008-04-05T22:13:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-06T04:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/?p=871"},"modified":"2008-12-20T20:00:34","modified_gmt":"2008-12-20T20:00:34","slug":"stretching-credulity-across-platforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/about\/2008\/04\/stretching-credulity-across-platforms\/","title":{"rendered":"Stretching credulity across platforms&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"drop_cap\">M<\/span>ore <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Can You Trust The Media?<\/span> trust fodder from the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinejournalismsymposium.wordpress.com\/2008\/04\/05\/credibility-perceptions-of-journalists-in-different-media\/\">Online Journalism Symposium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A paper titled <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/online.journalism.utexas.edu\/2008\/papers\/Robinson.pdf\">\u201cA Mediated, Interactive Call to Action: Audience Perceptions of Credibility and Authority for a <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Times<\/span> Journalist in Print vs. Online\u201d<\/a> picked on the <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">NYT<\/span>\u2019s <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Nick Kristof <\/span>and asked people to rate his credibility as a columnist and video reporter.<\/p>\n<p>Guess what? He\u2019s a more credible columnist than he is a TV reporter.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>People watching the video described Kristof as someone who is \u201cannoying,\u201d \u201csensational,\u201d and \u201carrogant,\u201d and who \u201ctalks in a monotone voice.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>People believed the story more because Kristof\u2019s video provided proof. On the other hand, &#8230; [s]eeing and hearing Kristof made some people recoil, instead of boosting his credibility.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the author: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>people who read Kristof consider him to be an omniscient being telling the story as a principled activist&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, people who watch Kristof interviewing his sources and witness him running all over the Sudan as his voiceovers narrate the victims\u2019 tales have more of an opportunity to consider Kristof as a person and a reporter, and thus, to judge him accordingly (and more harshly, it seems).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More Can You Trust The Media? trust fodder from the Online Journalism Symposium.
