Here is Robinson, (who edits the <a target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news-record.com\/\">News-Record<\/a> in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greensboro,_North_Carolina\">Greensboro<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.co.uk\/maps?f=q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=greensboro&amp;jsv=107&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=36.082402,-79.795074&amp;spn=0.566024,1.192017&amp;z=10&amp;iwloc=addr\">North Carolina<\/a>) explaining why he missed a retired editor speaking about the good old days and proposing another old-fashioned remedy for the news industry\u2019s ills: <span id=\"fullpost\"> <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Doubling the size of reporting staffs would certainly serve the community. The more journalists reporting the good, the bad and the ugly, the better.<\/p>\n<p>But those are the effects of problems facing newspapers not the cause. While good journalism has not changed markedly since the 1990s, technology has.<\/p>\n<p>So has the audience. So have people\u2019s habits.<\/p>\n<p>Not addressing those changes in discussions about journalism and newspapers is like talking about television as if there were still only three channels.<\/p>\n<p>Those changes: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the economic distress faced by traditional newspaper advertisers such as department stores<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>the loss of classified revenues<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>the splintering of the attentions and interests of the audience<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>the ability to get news and information from thousands of other places and in dozens of other ways<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>the sluggishness with which newspapers have anticipated the future (now present) and the sluggishness of their response<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These won\u2019t be fixed by reducing the profit margin or going back to the journalistic world of the 1980s and 90s.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He isn\u2019t wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More grist to the mill from one of my favourite reads, John Robinson.
