The <em><strong>Daily Telegraph<\/strong><\/em> has just <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.thestage.co.uk\/shenton\/2008\/05\/disappearing-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\">bid farewell<\/a> to its TV reviewer. Is television no longer worthy of criticism? Buzz. Dumb question.<\/p>\n<p>What actually has happened is that reviewing has been bypassed altogether. Take Channel 5&#8217;s <em>Strangelove: Married to the Eiffel Tower<\/em>*, a programme which featured women who claimed to be married to &#8211; yes &#8211; the Eiffel Tower and the Berlin Wall.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>24 May: The <strong><em>Independent<\/em><\/strong> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/extras\/sunday-review\/living\/i-married-the-eiffel-tower-832519.html\" target=\"_blank\">a piece<\/a> from the documentary-maker.<\/p>\n<p>27 May: The <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/newstopics\/howaboutthat\/2035996\/Woman-%27married%27-to-Berlin-Wall-for-29-years.html\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a><\/em><\/strong> carries a sober news account of just one of the women &#8211; Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer. No link to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berlinermauer.se\/\" target=\"_blank\">her website<\/a> though.<\/p>\n<p>27 May: The <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sol\/homepage\/news\/article1209083.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Sun<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (&#8216;cemented&#8217; the relationship, brick-teasers etc.) carries a less sober account. The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/2008\/05\/27\/swedish-woman-claims-to-be-married-to-berlin-wall-89520-20431772\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mirror<\/em><\/a><\/strong> moralises, invoking <em>Sex And The City<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>28 May: It makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/world\/2008-05\/28\/content_6717985.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>China Daily<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Guardian<\/strong><\/em> readers might have come across Berliner-Mauer before in Adrian Searle&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/arts.guardian.co.uk\/art\/visualart\/story\/0,,2271772,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">account<\/a> of the Berlin Biennial, where she is the subject of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kopenhagen.dk\/interviews\/interviews\/interview_lars_laumann\/\" target=\"_blank\">a film<\/a> by artist <a href=\"http:\/\/larslaumann.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lars Laumann<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Berliner-Mauer turns out to be something of a self-publicist. Back in 1997, as plain old Eija-Riitta Eklof, she was featured in the <em>Independent<\/em> for her love of <a href=\"http:\/\/members.tripod.com\/guillotine\/eij.html\" target=\"_blank\">guillotines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But her own efforts were as nothing compared to a bit of pre-programme publicity re-packaged and syndicated. The programme airs in the UK on 4 June. Reviewing by then will feel a little late&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>*Produced by Blink Films, the company set up by former Channel 5 director of programmes Dan Chambers.
