How so? Pernicious bloke-ism by the programme&#8217;s editor, <strong>Craig Oliver<\/strong>?<!--more--><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-984\" href=\"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/2008\/06\/sexism-on-the-10\/bbcnewslogo-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium frame wp-image-984\" title=\"bbcnewslogo\" src=\"http:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/bbcnewslogo.jpg\" alt=\"BBC News\" width=\"200\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/bbcnewslogo.jpg 200w, https:\/\/adrianmonck.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/bbcnewslogo-100x72.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, if you only pursued a strategy of putting on air the BBC&#8217;s editors &#8211; its best journalists &#8211; you would pack your running order with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nick Robinson<\/strong>, Politics<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert Peston<\/strong>, Business<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark Easton<\/strong>, Home Affairs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Justin Webb<\/strong>, North America<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeremy Bowen<\/strong>, Middle East<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark Mardell<\/strong>, Europe<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Simpson<\/strong>, World Affairs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mihir Bose<\/strong>, Sport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Room for a different chromosome? Ah yes&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stephanie Flanders<\/strong>, Economics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Who is to blame for this sexual disbalance? After all, Oliver didn&#8217;t make those appointments. It must be the management: <strong>Helen Boaden<\/strong>, Director of News? Maybe for reporting it&#8217;s <strong>Fran Unsworth<\/strong>, Head of Newsgathering? <\/p>\n<p>Just kidding. The BBC has an impressive tranche of female executives. But news organizations don&#8217;t make life easy for women journalists who want to have kids and stay working. Look at the number of female reporters who took redundo (buy-outs) at the BBC recently.<\/p>\n<p>So is this really about sexism? I don&#8217;t think so.<\/p>\n<p>Read between the lines. Oliver wants the top team on the 10. That&#8217;s more male than female (blame legacy appointments). With the new, leaner Beeb newsgathering regime that puts pressure on assigners. The result is conflict.<\/p>\n<p>In political organizations, warfare manifests itself not in bloody frontal assaults but in tactical flanking manoeuvres like the one against Oliver and his programme.
