Let me make up for it.<\/p>\n<p>Here is Martin <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/currybet\/~3\/302284819\/bbc_new_media_budget.php\" target=\"_blank\">addressing<\/a> <strong>Ed Roussel<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.guardian.co.uk\/digitalcontent\/2008\/05\/budgetbusting_bbccouk_threaten.html\" target=\"_blank\">piece on the <strong><em>Guardian<\/em><\/strong> PDA blog<\/a> (itself a kind of Christmas footie match given the <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/commentisfree.guardian.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Comment is Free<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\/<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/my.telegraph.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">My Telegraph<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/shanerichmond\/may08\/that-comment-is-free-argument-again.htm\" target=\"_blank\">trench warfare<\/a>):<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve watched time and time again in usability labs that for a lot of users &#8220;Everything starts with <strong>Google<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Well, when Google add street-views to their UK mapping product, and you access it directly from Google search, that will be the death knell for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.multimap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Multimap<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.streetmap.co.uk\/\">Streetmap<\/a> in the UK. When Google add more information directly from a look-up of a postcode via search, that will be the death knell for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upmystreet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Upmystreet<\/a> and similar British services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google News<\/strong> already does a search &#8216;by location&#8217; option in their advanced search, and once they start offering that as a personalisation option on Google News, that will be yet another nail in the coffin for local newspapers and news services.<\/p>\n<p>Never mind whether the <strong>BBC<\/strong> will produce &#8216;ultra-local&#8217; news hubs, it is Google&#8217;s infinite budget, spotless brand, and seemingly completely free hand in the UK market that poses a bigger commercial threat to all of the UK&#8217;s web industry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Martin Belam writes one of those blogs I read so religiously I almost never bother to pass on what is actually written.
