Can You Trust The Media? – post launch

So not everyone gets the book, and I – like an idiot – went in prepared to defend the detail without explaining the big picture, utterly ignoring everything I would ever tell people…

Accused of nihilism (by Andrew Gilligan) I was slightly embarrassed. My first great literary love was Fathers and Sons, Turgenev’s novel which gave nihilism to the world.

But no, I’m no Bazarov

  1. I thought you gave a good summary of the book’s main arguments in the face of a number of “straw man” objections that mostly failed to address what you’d written. Also, watching people who hadn’t read your book trying to disagree with it was Funny.

Incidentally – John Goodman and the Coens on nihlism, from The Big Lebowski.

    “DONNY: They were Nazis, Dude?
WALTER: Come on, Donny, they were threatening castration!

    DONNY: Uh-huh.

WALTER: Are you gonna split hairs?

    DONNY: No–

    WALTER: Am I wrong?

    DONNY: Well–

    DUDE: They’re nihilists.

    WALTER: Huh?

DUDE: They kept saying they believe in nothing.
    WALTER: Nihilists! Jesus.

    Walter looks haunted

Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos.”

  2. Love those Coen Brothers – so sorry not to catch up in person last night!

  3. Adrian – my fault, it was later than I expected by the end and I dashed straight off to another engagement. Hopefully next time.
